Casting, Sinking, Feeling | 2025
A forest of mobiles comprised of fluorescent red Northern California bull kelp is set against flowing cyanotype-printed fabric suspended below the gallery ceiling. The kelp mobiles gently rotate and visitors are invited to activate the movement of the fabric by pulling on rings set to either side of the gallery. Plush carpeting below the cyanotype allows visitors to recline and view the rippling fabric above. This immersive environment invites a practice of observation akin to augury—the reading of cast objects and environmental patterns to divine meaning. Casting, Sinking, Feeling draws on these visual languages of augury to imagine alternative forms of knowing as we face the irreversible human impact on marine ecosystems and plunge into an unknown future of emergent adaptations.
