108 Samples, 2012
108 Samples consists of 108 ink drawings, each measuring 7 x 10 inches, arranged in a grid. I created one drawing daily for 108 consecutive days, beginning in the center of the grid and moving outwards in a clockwise kora (ritual circumambulation). Each new drawing was made referencing only those immediately adjacent to it in an evolving visual conversation.
108 Samples was conceived as both a meditative ritual and a symbolic exploration. The grid structure, inspired by sampling methodologies used in ecological field research, becomes a framework for systematically collecting and mapping personal imaginings of the ocean. It mirrors the hubris and hope within the scientific method’s attempt to fully capture something as fluid, vast, complex, and evolving as an ecosystem—be it internal or external.
