We Have Known Each Other, 2007

For We Have Known Each Other I photographed my closest friends and overlaid the photographs with drawings made from my memory of their faces. I was interested in my subjectivity as stakeholder and image-maker, and the possibility of visually representing a composite of these locally distinct realities. I am drawn to both the portrait’s seductive promise of revelation, and the tragedy of its ultimate inability to make good on that promise. This series is a meditation on or incantation of the Sisyphean desire to know another human being so fully as to transcend our own solitude.
