Sublittoral Watch, 2015

Sublittoral Watch was made as I began learning to ocean freedive—underwater breathhold for long periods of time. I was interested in how that skill might, in some small way, begin to recalibrate a perspective borne of a terrestrial life. The inverted footage hovers just below the ocean’s surface, training its gaze on passing flotsam and sea-life. Our land- and gravity- bound bodies and sensory systems register the familiar but are, at the same time, disoriented by visual markers that confuse expectation.
